Colorado Rockies: History in the Making or Sports Nightmare?
Pondering a Wise Gamble: Is It Strategic to Oppose the Colorado Rockies in Every Match?
Get ready for some major baseball drama! The Colorado Rockies are the talk of the town - for all the wrong reasons. Last year, I mused about whether we should bet against the Chicago White Sox in every game, given their horrendous 3-18 start. Well, the 2025 Rockies took it up a notch in the 'who can be the worst' race, starting off a lousy 4-17 in their first 21 games. While the White Sox eventually set an MLB record for losses in a season with 121, the Rockies are hot on their heels, boasting a record of 6-28 - significantly worse than the White Sox's start!
So, who's the next punching bag of the season? Our friends in Denver!
Here are some top MLB resources for all the baseball enthusiasts out there:

Fast-forward to May 5, an off-day for the Rockies, and they were a staggering seventeen games behind their division. Pretty sure that's a record, but I wouldn't bet on it (no pun intended!). The other four teams in the NL West all had records above .500 at the time of publishing. But hey, the good news is all of them still had the majority of their games left against the Rockies!
Things could potentially stay this dire as the season progresses. Enter the question: should we bet against the Rockies in every game? After all, the White Sox managed to win over 27% of their games despite their record, so there's a chance the Rockies could turn things around. But it sure seems like they're on their way to setting a new record for futility!
Colorado Rockies' Devastating Stats
The stats are as grim as the standings. It's hard to imagine any MLB team sustaining a .176 batting average over 162 games, but that's where the Rockies are right now. Of their 28 losses, 22 have been by more than one run, including eight losses by 5+ runs, making the run line against Colorado a very lucrative bet.
The Rockies batting stats are abysmal, with an overall .209 batting average, .278 on-base percentage, and .342 slugging percentage. Their offensive performance on the road is pathetic, averaging just 2.2 runs per game, with a league-high 28.4% strikeout rate. Even with the Coors Field Effect, their offensive output is laughable, averaging 4.3 runs per game at home. But their opponents? They score nearly 6.5 runs per game!
As for their pitching, it's not a whole lot better. Their collective 5.38 ERA and 4.68 FIP over 293 innings are nothing to write home about. Starting pitchers have been even worse, boasting a 6.53 ERA and 4.84 FIP in 165.1 innings.
Colorado Rockies' Tough Schedule Ahead
Things don't look set to improve for the Rockies based on their schedule.
- May 6-8: vs. Tigers (AL Central leaders)
- May 9-11: vs. Padres (potential playoff team)
- May 12-14: at Rangers (only upcoming opponent with a losing record until June 2-4)
- May 16-18: at Diamondbacks
- May 19-22: vs. Phillies (potential playoff team)
- May 23-25: vs. Yankees (AL East leaders)
- May 26-28: at Cubs (NL Central leaders)
- May 30-June 1: at Mets (NL East leaders)
So, what would be a good Over/Under line for wins in that stretch? It's hard to imagine a team being as bad as the Rockies have been for an extended period, but it wouldn't be a shock if they expanded their record of futility. Wagers against the Rockies will likely continue to be attractive, whether for parlay sweeteners or run line opportunities, given their upcoming schedule and enormous underdog status. But be prepared to shell out some serious money for those juicy prices!
