The Smog Hangs over Krasnoyarsk Again: No Breeze Leads to NMU Alert
Polluted air returns to Krasnoyarsk
It's hard to catch a breath in Krasnoyarsk once more. The stillness brought on by the lack of wind has triggered an NMU (abnormally high concentration of pollutants) alert, which will last a full two days, from 7:00 PM on February 27 to 4:00 PM on March 1.
The first level of meteorological danger, set by the Middle Siberian Branch of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet), goes into effect at 7:00 PM on February 27 and will last until 4:00 PM on March 1.
It seems as if yesterday, when a strong wind was blowing, there was no hint of trouble ahead. But the weather can change quickly, and emissions remain a constant factor.
"I urge factories and individual entrepreneurs to start implementing measures to reduce the burden on the Earth's atmosphere right away," said the Minister of Ecology, Vladimir Chasovitin, on his social media accounts. He also urged citizens to postpone or cancel outdoor activities that could contribute to a rise in particulates and air pollution.
Chasovitin stressed that ecological inspectors will work in overdrive during this period.
In recent times, unfavorable weather conditions have been announced quite frequently - it has been just a week since the last smog invasion. A reminder that one of the primary causes of air pollution is the smog-producing private sector[2].

Insights from "Clean Air" Project:
The "Clean Air" project is a broader initiative across Russia aimed at improving air quality. This project involves 41 cities, including several industrial centers, and is part of the Ecology national project. The goal is to reduce emissions through comprehensive plans that include aggregate calculations of emissions and lists of pollutants affecting human health [3].
However, there is no specific information available about measures directly related to the NMU alert announced in Krasnoyarsk under the "Clean Air" project. Local announcements or updates from municipal authorities would be necessary for specific measures in Krasnoyarsk.

Despite the ongoing "Clean Air" project aiming to improve Russia's air quality, the ongoing NMU alert in Krasnoyarsk highlights the persistent issue of air pollution, particularly from private sector activities that contribute to smog. The sudden weather changes and lack of wind exacerbate this problem, demonstrating the need for immediate action in reducing emissions, as urged by the Minister of Ecology, Vladimir Chasovitin. The science and environmental communities continue to watch the climate-change and weather patterns closely, understanding their impact on our environment and health.
