🗞️ Election Night Hotspots to Watch Out For

With polling day just around the corner on April 28, here are 12 federal ridings that might steal the spotlight due to their tight races or strategic importance to the parties. Buckle up!

Toronto-St. Paul's 📍 ON

After the Conservatives' win in the Toronto-St. Paul's by-election, political analysts hailed it as a victory for Pierre Poilievre's party. However, things have considerably changed since then. 338Canada, a popular election forecasting aggregator, currently predicts a win for the Liberal candidate, Leslie Church, instead of the incumbent Conservative, Don Stewart. This swift turn of events might signify a shift in voter sentiment throughout the campaign.

LaSalle-Emard-Verdun 📍 QC

In LaSalle-Emard-Verdun, the incumbent Liberal candidate, Claude Guay, former President and CEO of IBM Canada, leads in voting intentions according to 338Canada. The Liberal Party's Montreal South-West city councilor, Craig Sauvé, will once again represent the New Democratic Party (NDP) in an attempt to win the seat in this highly contested riding.

Gaspésie-Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine-Listuguj 📍 QC

This new riding, created during the 2023 redistribution, is bound to generate some excitement. With long-time incumbent Diane Lebouthillier facing Alexis Deschênes, who is running for the Bloc Québécois, both candidates are in a tight race, as predicted by 338Canada.

Trois-Rivières 📍 QC

The race for Trois-Rivières looks neck and neck between the Liberal Party, Conservative Party, and the Bloc Québécois, according to 338Canada. The main rivals are the Liberal candidate Caroline Desrochers, public servant for Global Affairs, and the Conservative candidate Yves Lévesque, former mayor of Trois-Rivières.

Papineau 📍 QC

For the first time in 17 years, the name of Justin Trudeau will not appear on the ballot in Papineau. The Liberal candidate, Marjorie Michel, former chief of staff to Justin Trudeau, will need to secure more votes than Indian Voices spokesperson and pro-Palestinian NDP candidate Niall Ricardo, Bloc Québécois candidate Sophy Forget-Bélanger, and Conservative candidate Julio Rivera to continue the Liberal tradition in this historically Liberal stronghold.

Burnaby Central 📍 BC

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is running for re-election in Burnaby Central. Although the NDP has seen a decline in support in the province since the 2021 election, Singh remains hopeful for a victory. He faces Liberal candidate Wade Wei Lin Chang and Conservative candidate James Yan.

Saanich-Gulf Islands 📍 BC

Green Party co-leader Elizabeth May has been the representative of this riding since 2011. May may not be re-elected, as she faces Conservative candidate Cathie Ounsted, Liberal candidate David Beckham, and NDP candidate Colin Plant.

Brome-Missisquoi 📍 QC

This riding caused quite a stir in the 2021 election, with only 197 votes separating Bloc Québécois candidate Marilou Alarie and Liberal candidate Pascale St-Onge. This year, neither of the candidates is running. Instead, Bromont Mayor Louis-Villeneuve aims to retain the Liberal seat, while former football player Steve Charbonneau and actor Jeff Boudreault represent the Conservatives and Bloc Québécois respectively.

Beauport-Limoilou 📍 QC

With 338Canada predicting a close race between the Conservatives, Liberals, and Bloc Québécois, the riding of Beauport-Limoilou could be in for an exciting contest. Conservative candidate Hugo Langlois, a broadcast journalist, columnist, and former president of the Quebec Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will face incumbent Bloc Québécois candidate Julie Vignola and Liberal candidate Steeve Lavoie.

Chicoutimi-Le Fjord 📍 QC

Conservative candidate Richard Martel is seeking re-election in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. Although 338Canada currently gives him the edge, the race remains open, as Bloc Québécois candidate Marc St-Hilaire and Liberal candidate Stéphane Proulx also compete for votes.

Kitchener Centre 📍 ON

The Green Party had two seats at the dissolution of parliament last month. Green candidate Mike Morrice is working to retain the seat he won in the 2021 elections after his Liberal opponent stepped down. However, he might face some challenges, as Conservative candidate Kelly DeRidder and Liberal candidate Brian Adeba are close behind him in the polls, particularly cautioned by the threat posed by Donald Trump.

Edmonton-Centre 📍 AB

In the case of Alberta electing more liberals than anticipated, the riding of Edmonton-Centre will undoubtedly be a showdown. Liberal incumbent Randy Boissonnault had to resign his ministerial post due to allegations regarding his Indigenous origins, creating an opportunity for Eleanor Olszewski, the Liberal Party's candidate, to show off her leadership skills against Conservative candidate Sayid Ahmed and NDP candidate Trisha Estabrooks.
