Politics: Linnemann Advocates for Use of Debate Rather than Ban on AfD Party
Carsten Linnemann, a prominent political figure, has voiced his concerns over the ongoing debate about a potential party ban for the Alternative for Germany (AfD). In interviews with RTL and ntv, Linnemann expressed his belief that a party ban procedure is not productive and distracts from substantive debate, which he considers more important than the ban itself.
Linnemann criticised the AfD's party leader, Alice Weidel, for taking pleasure in economic downturns and insolvencies. He also asserted that the arguments against the AfD are superior, as evidenced in a summer interview where Weidel was unable to name any points going well in Germany.
The interview in question, conducted by Markus Preiß for ARD's Sommerinterview on July 20, 2025, was marked by critical statements regarding the AfD's success in the 2025 federal election and ongoing debates about a possible ban procedure due to racist and ethnic remarks within the party.
Linnemann also expressed disapproval towards Weidel's behaviour during the interview, stating that loud shouts do not contribute to democracy. He called for a focus on substantive debate, arguing that it is more important to engage with the AfD's ideologies and address their goals, which he believes are aimed at destroying Germany.
Despite his criticism, Linnemann acknowledged the significance of the AfD's voter base, stating that the ten million voters of the AfD will not disappear overnight. Instead, he called for better politics to address the concerns that have led to the AfD's rise in popularity.
Linnemann's comments come as the SPD debates a party ban for the AfD, a decision that is currently being criticised by the political figure. He believes that engaging with the AfD in debate is a more effective way to challenge their ideologies and ultimately, protect Germany.
