Politics discussions within the BerlinsideOut podcast, presented from an outsider's viewpoint, encompassing German political scenarios

BerlinsideOut, a podcast focusing on German and European politics, was launched last year following the invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. Hosted by Benjamin Tallis, a British-born expert in security and foreign policy fields, and Aaron Gasch Burnett, a German-Canadian journalist who moved to Berlin 12 years ago, the podcast has quickly gained popularity.

The concept for BerlinsideOut grew out of a friendship that started online and was sealed over beers at a fundraiser for Ukraine. Politically, Berlin is seen as a place to be right now if one wants to make a difference, as the country's future direction is in a state of flux in many ways. BerlinsideOut aims to influence the direction of Germany's politics, despite its academic tone, by delivering information with a sense of urgency and impatience regarding policy change.

Roughly half of BerlinsideOut's listeners are from Germany, with the rest from around the world. Not many listeners are from Russia, according to Tallis. The podcast attracts a lot of think-tankers, academics, and policy experts, both locally and internationally. It also aims to give Germans a clearer idea of how they and their policies are seen around the world.

The topics discussed in each episode include Germany's energy and security strategy, and its relationship with the Baltic Sea countries. The name of the Senior Research Fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) active in Berlin and participating in the BerlinsideOut podcast is Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff. Tallis currently holds a post as senior research fellow at the DGAP.

Expertise is not a prerequisite for listening to BerlinsideOut, according to Gasch Burnett. The podcast aims to reach people who are enthusiastic about learning more about politics and policy, without dumbing things down. It gives people living in Berlin a chance to understand the insider world of politics from within the foreign policy bubble.

BerlinsideOut has received overwhelmingly enthusiastic reactions from listeners. The surge in demand for quality analysis and information among the public since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine has been noted by Tallis. The podcast is available on various podcast platforms.
