Draft Day Capital: Washington Secures 2027 NFL Draft Amid Renewed Stadium Pursuit
Politics Across Nations |
Washington, D.C., is doubling down on its sports revival, with President Donald Trump announcing Monday that the city will host the 2027 NFL Draft on the National Mall. The popular event is returning to the nation's capital for the first time since the 1940s.
The news comes as Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris, Commissioner Roger Goodell, and District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser gathered in the Oval Office to formalize the massive sports and entertainment project.
Trump enthused, "I don't believe there's ever been anything like this. It's gonna be stunning. It's gonna be something nobody else could ever replicate. It's really exciting!"
This announcement follows the previous reveal that the Commanders plan to build a new stadia kingdom on the historic RFK Stadium site, as part of a wider urban development scheme. Trump lauded the land, proclaiming, "I don't think there's a better site anywhere in the world."
This marks a shift from earlier attempts, during Dan Snyder's ownership, to secure the draft. Now, the 2027 event will unfold under Harris' leadership, after buying the Commanders from Snyder in 2023.
"What an incredible day for Washington!" Harris exclaimed. "We anticipate over a million attendees, and it'll be a magnificent day, giving the world a glimpse of what Washington truly represents."
Washington last hosted the draft in 1941, at the Willard Hotel. Fast-forward to 2021—and Green Bay, the NFL's smallest market, successfully hosted the extravaganza outside historic Lambeau Field. The NFL announced an astounding crowd of 600,000 fans over the three days.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell paid tribute to the draft's growth, saying, "The draft has evolved into one of the nation's greatest entertainment and sports events. It's not just an event—it'll showcase Washington's remarkable progress."
The NFL draft used to be synonymous with Radio City Music Hall in New York City but has grown in popularity since it went mobile in 2015, with successive cities such as Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Nashville, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Kansas City, and Detroit playing host.
The 2027 draft in Washington will coincide with the third anniversary of the team's franchise-altered selection of quarterback Jayden Daniels at the second pick. The Commanders made the playoffs and reached the NFC championship game in Daniels' rookie year, setting their sights on Super Bowl glory.
Trump weighed in, acknowledging the team's recent success under Harris' guidance, stating, "I have to say that Josh's draft was very good. You've got a great quarterback—one of the best."
The renewed focus on sports and entertainment is a testament to Washington's resurgence, following decades of dwindling interest since the organization's golden era that saw three Super Bowl victories. The recent lease at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, expires in 2027, hastening this new beginning.
Goodell emphasized the significance of having a transformed Washington Commanders on the football field and in the capital, saying, "The return of the team to their hometown—and a state-of-the-art stadium—will be an exceptional opportunity for the NFL."
