In a survey, local council members candidly acknowledged substantial financial struggles looming on the horizon for their communities, overtaking housing shortages and refugee intake as the most pressing concerns.

A whopping 90% of respondents from city and town councils across the country viewed their communities' financial predicament as a significant or very significant challenge in the coming years.array(20%, 34%, 28%, 30%) begged the question of housing shortages or refugee intake as pressing matters compared to the grim financial landscape on the horizon.

Disproportionately, policymakers in more densely populated communities and western Germany expressed more apprehension towards housing shortages and refugee intake. However, only 9% of respondents considered stepping down from public office due to safety concerns.

Talent Gap in Local Politics

Local politicians are pessimistic about the future populace of candidates for their positions, with 61% anticipating a talent shortage. To stir enthusiasm and entice candidates, incentives such as increased recognition and better financial compensation are in high demand, with 51% and 49% of respondents advocating for these enhancements, respectively.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in partnership with the Körber Foundation, has extended an invitation to around 100 officeholders across Germany for a dialogue on shared experiences at Schloss Bellevue.
