Political Fireworks Erupt in Saxony-Anhalt as Election Nears

Almost 15 months before the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, fireworks flew in parliament as top AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund and incumbent Minister President Reiner Haseloff (CDU) butted heads. "This is my turf, and they ain't gonna muck it up," Haseloff quipped after Siegmund lambasted him. "I'm determined to keep them from snatching the reins of power."

Haseloff placed the next election squarely as a make-or-break moment for Saxony-Anhalt's future. "You've tasted victory before, but count on us to put the brakes on that victory lap," he warned. Stepping off-script, the head of government delivered a fiery speech akin to none before.

Siegmund Stirs Debate with "Anti-Germany Coalition" Claim

Siegmund described the black-red-yellow coalition's term as a wasted four years and accused them of forming an "Anti-Germany coalition." He alleged that the coalition failed to deliver free daycare, free school meals, and rendered doctors scarce. "We're barreling towards a calamity with our eyes wide open," Siegmond warned. He predicts people's ignorance could lead them to back the AfD.

On September 6, 2026, the state election in Saxony-Anhalt is set to take place. At present, a coalition of CDU, SPD, and FDP holds the reins. The question remains whether Haseloff will run again as CDU's top candidate or if CDU state chairman and economics minister Sven Schulze will take over the reins.

Haseloff Slams AfD's Misdirection

Everywhere he goes in Germany, Haseloff faces questions on how to stabilize the government in Saxony-Anhalt. "I'm chuffed to bits by that, and I'm proud of our efforts to tackle problems," he said. In contrast, Haseloff claimed the AfD errs if it banks on its success in the European and federal elections emotionally.

Haseloff has been in power since 2011, making him the longest-serving minister president in Germany. He has left no stone unturned, highlighting that the decision on the top candidate will be made a year before the election. The AfD has already unveiled Siegmond as its top candidate.
