Politician succumbs to death after electrocution in Turkey.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Turkey has been left in shock following the untimely demise of its esteemed politician, Ferdi Zeyrek. The social democratic CHP member and the Mayor of Manisa Metropolitan Municipality, Zeyrek, passed away on June 9, 2025, exactly three days after a tragic electrical incident at his residence.

The incident took place on June 6, amidst the Yunusemre district, more specifically, the underground equipment or motor room of his private swimming pool. In an attempt to investigate a fault in the pool’s motor system, Zeyrek suffered a devastating electric shock.

Upon receiving the call, emergency responders performed CPR for approximately 70 minutes before successfully resuscitating him. However, Zeyrek was critically injured and was transported to intensive care at Manisa Celal Bayar University’s Hafsa Sultan Hospital. Despite the relentless efforts of the medical team, Zeyrek succumbed to his injuries on the evening of June 9.

Since the incident, a preliminary investigation led by the Manisa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has been underway. Nearly 20 individuals, including emergency responders, technical staff, and first witnesses, have been questioned. Following the investigation, two individuals have been detained, and the legal process is still ongoing.

An expert report compiled by a team of court-appointed electrical and mechanical engineers has shed light on six critical safety failures in the pool’s electrical infrastructure and safety systems. The report indicated that the pump motor was already malfunctioning at the time of the incident, and there was a severe lack of a residual current device (RCD), which is vital for preventing electrical accidents.

The news of Zeyrek's death was first broken to his mother with great caution, as she was at risk of suffering a heart attack. Zeyrek was a married man with three daughters, according to reports.

EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHIES

Ekrem Imamoglu, a close colleague of Zeyrek and the dismissed mayor of Istanbul, expressed his grief with tears in his eyes. "My heart aches so much, I can't describe it. I'm so sorry," he penned. "I feel an indescribable grief over the loss of Ferdi Zeyrek, a hardworking, honest, enthusiastic, successful, and sincere person who, as I know, dedicated himself to Manisa, our dear friend, our brother, and the Mayor of the city of Manisa."

Even Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his condolences after acknowledging the tragic accident.

Zeyrek's legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of his constituents and fellow politicians alike. May he rest in peace.
