Mathilde Blanchette Vézina, a Canadian politician from Quebec, has made a shocking announcement that she will now sit as an independent deputy in the National Assembly of Quebec. The member for the riding of Jean-Lesage, who has been affiliated with the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) since 2018, has expressed her dissatisfaction with certain decisions made by the party, particularly in regards to funding key projects and neglecting important issues such as access to foreign labor and healthcare in the regions.

Blanchette Vézina made her announcement during a closed-door meeting with CAQ MPs, citing delays and blocks to key projects and a lack of a "clear and visionary" plan from Prime Minister Francois Legault as her reasons for leaving the party. She has called for Legault's resignation and accused him of abandoning regions and neglecting important issues.

Blanchette Vézina comes from a "family of Péquistes" and has expressed her belief in a "third way" but without Legault. She intends to complete her term and run again in 2026, but has not ruled out joining another party.

The departure of Blanchette Vézina leaves the CAQ with three fewer deputies in the wake of Legault's cabinet shuffle. Notably absent from the CAQ caucus meeting on Thursday were François Bonnardel and André Lamontagne.

Pierre Dufour, the deputy of Abitibi-Est, was expelled by the prime minister after threatening to leave the party if an elected official from the region was not appointed to the cabinet. The Gaspésie and Abitibi-Témiscamingue regions have no ministers, despite the CAQ holding all the seats in these regions.

André Laforest resigned to run for the mayor of Saguenay, and a by-election will be held in Chicoutimi. Blanchette Vézina, the MP for Rimouski, has been excluded from the Cabinet.

Blanchette Vézina believes that certain projects, such as maritime transport in eastern Québec, air transport improvement, and Highway 20 extension, have been sidelined in favor of other projects. She has "lost faith" in the current leadership and has not ruled out joining another party. CAQ MPs were reportedly shocked by her announcement.
