French Senator Rachid Temal Visits Taiwan, Strengthening Ties Between Countries

French Senator Rachid Temal visited Taiwan from Sunday, leading a delegation of senators. The visit, which is intended to demonstrate concrete support for the island nation, marks a significant step in the warming ties between the two countries.

During his visit, Senator Temal met with Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials in Taipei and invited Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu to visit France. He also expressed hope for increased cooperation between Taiwan and France in areas such as trade, investment, cultural and educational exchanges, high-tech industry collaboration, combating disinformation, and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait.

At a separate meeting, Senator Temal stated that members of the French Senate support Taiwan and regard its democracy as a model. The French Senate faction that supports Taiwan is the group affiliated with the French Socialist Party (Parti socialiste), which has expressed support for Taiwan’s democratic development as an example.

Senator Temal is the chairman of the French Senate's Taiwan Friendship Group, which has played a key role in the developments of the warming ties between the two countries. The long-standing support of the French Parliament for Taiwan has been a cornerstone of this relationship in the past few years.

In a move to further strengthen the ties, Senator Temal asked France to support Taiwan's bid to join the International Criminal Police Organization. DPP Secretary-General Hsu Kuo-yung thanked France for supporting Taiwan's participation in international organizations, including the World Health Assembly and the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The French government's updated Indo-Pacific Strategy report has gained recognition from the EU. The report emphasizes France's desire for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, as well as opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the "status quo." This stance is in line with recent public statements by French President Emmanuel Macron supporting the "status quo" in the Taiwan Strait.

Temal's statements support this stance, reiterating France's strong commitment to peace, stability, and freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait. Hopefully, more ministerial-level exchanges and reciprocal visits by lawmakers will be arranged between Taiwan and France.

The visit of Senator Temal and his delegation also signaled increasingly close economic and trade ties. Taiwanese and French companies have announced cooperation in sectors such as semiconductors and satellites.

France hopes that Taiwan's democratic system would endure, and the "status quo," including boundaries, should be maintained. With the ongoing support and cooperation between the two countries, it seems that this hope may become a reality.
