Politician from the local area under arrest, accused of orchestrating violence in Nagpur; latest FIR alleges a female police officer was sexually assaulted.
In the aftermath of the communal flare-up in Nagpur that took place in March 2025, a local leader named Fahim Khan has been identified as the alleged mastermind behind the unrest.
Fahim Khan, president of the Minorities Democratic Party (MDP), has been booked in multiple cases related to the violence. He is accused of administering a social media group that spread inflammatory and provocative messages against another community, which contributed to fueling the riot. Police arrested him on Tuesday night, and after his bail was granted, he was subjected to preventive action with strict bail conditions aimed at ensuring peaceful conduct.
The violence began at Gandhi Gate in Mahal following protests demanding the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb. The ensuing clashes resulted in around 40 police officers being injured, one person being killed, and property damage worth lakhs of rupees. Fahim Khan was specifically named for his role in inciting and orchestrating the unrest via social media and organizing local groups involved in the disturbances.
Following the violence, the authorities took strong action, including his arrest, the issuance of bonds with conditions for peace, and the demolition of his house under police supervision. These measures indicate the severity with which the state treats his alleged involvement in the riots.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra DGP Rashmi Shukla held a meeting with senior police officers from across the state via video conferencing to investigate whether the conspiracy behind the violence was hatched by one person or a group. Curfew has been imposed for the second consecutive day in the jurisdiction of 10 police stations across Nagpur, and the situation remains under control, but curfew orders continue in sensitive parts.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has clarified its stand on the ongoing Aurangzeb controversy, stating that the issue is not relevant at present, and the RSS does not support any form of violence. However, videos show rioters in Nagpur shouting slogans in support of Aurangzeb and hailing him as 'Alamgir Hazrat'.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reiterated that those involved in the Nagpur riots will be caught even if they are hiding in graves. He also stated that attacks on the police will not be forgiven. So far, the police have already arrested more than 50 people in connection with the violence.
