Politician Explains Decision to Leave PDP and Join APC Party

In a surprising twist, Oluwole Oke, a seasoned legislator representing the Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency in Osun State, has decided to part ways with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and pledge his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This shocking move, announced two weeks ago, has ignited a flurry of discussions and speculations in political circles.

Oluwole Oke, a political heavyweight who first entered the House of Representatives in 1999, has been a prominent PDP member and was once the Chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. However, his recent discontent with his previous party seems to have led him down a new path.

In an interview, Oke revealed that his decision to join the APC was inspired by his desire to empower his constituents and contribute to the infrastructural development of his community. Speaking to Punch, he elaborated, "I wanted to ensure that I can actualize my passion of empowering the people and influence infrastructural development and welfare of the people in my constituency."

Oke expressed his readiness to support the President's Renewed Hope Agenda, stating, "I will be ready to contribute my own quota for the progress of the Renewed Hope agenda of the President for the betterment of a greater number of Nigerians across the length and breadth of the country."

His commitment to fairness and inclusivity is evident as he declared, "In pursuing our agenda, we will let equity, fairness, and justice be our guiding principles."

The lawmaker had previously accused the administration of marginalizing his constituency, which he described as the "food basket" of Osun State. Since his defection, several PDP stakeholders, particularly from the Ijebu North axis, have followed his lead and joined the APC, indicating a shift in political alliances.

However, the Osun PDP has dismissed Oke's exit as inconsequential and insists that it won't impact their party's strength in the state. This departure is yet another example of the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics, where loyalties may shift, and party allegiances may change.

As for the South-East, several influential figures have weighed in with their opinions. Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State, believes that to connect the South-East to the center, the region needs to join the APC. On the other hand, Vice President, Alex Ekwueme, emphasized the importance of the South-East standing together and focusing on unity. Peter Obi, former vice-presidential candidate, and governorship aspirant in Anambra, is yet to announce his plans for the 2027 elections.

Amidst these political maneuvers, the future of Nigerian politics remains uncertain, but one thing is clear – the game is far from over.
