Firing Back at the Feds: Gusein Gasanov's Legal Battle

In a surprising twist, renowned Russian blogger Gusein Gasanov has declared his intention to sue Ekaterina Mizulina, the head of LBI. Gasanov made this announcement on his Instagram page, owned by Meta, which was banned in Russia for extremist activities. With over 30 million followers on his Instagram account, this legal tussle is bound to grab headlines.

Not too long ago, in 2024, the Federal Tax Service took Gasanov to court over a debt of 112 million rubles. The Moscow Arbitration Court initially ordered the seizure of Gasanov's property, but the proceedings were later terminated following the repayment of the debt. According to Gasanov's lawyer, Dmitry Koziakhin, the blogger had settled more than 300 million rubles in installments.

In 2023, Mizulina and LBI petitioned the MVD to investigate Gasanov, claiming he was involved in fraudulent activities similar to those of Axz Shabutdinov, who was detained in Moscow in November 2023. Despite four attempts, Mizulina and LBI failed to initiate a criminal case.

Gasanov found himself in hot water when it was revealed on May 14 that he had been arrested in absentia and accused of tax evasion and money laundering. Investigators allege that he evaded paying taxes amounting to over 170 million rubles between 2019 and 2021. Furthermore, it's claimed that Gasanov illegally laundered 20 million rubles through financial operations and had fled to a foreign country.

After being accused, Gasanov published a certificate from the Federal Tax Service, stating that he had no outstanding debts as of August 15, 2024. Semblance of aCoordinating contradictory information, Gasanov wrote on social media "Imagine the situation: you paid 320 million rubles (almost $4 million) including fines, and the case is still open!"

Mizulina, in response, labeled Gasanov a "scam artist" in her Telegram channel and accused him of fabricating stories and documents from 2024. She also questioned Telegram's commitment to free speech, pointing out that there are millions of pleas for help from schoolchildren facing issues such as bullying and self-harm on the platform.

Gasanov lashed back at Mizulina's allegations, insisting that he had paid off all his debts and asked Telegram's management to address her publications, which he claimed were harmful to society. Gasanov also threatened to file a lawsuit against Mizulina for her statements.

In retaliation, Mizulina shared a screenshot of Gasanov's post on her Telegram channel, urging her followers to report his page. She also criticized Telegram for their inaction regarding freedom of speech and censorship. In a sarcastic tone, Mizulina questioned whether Telegram could handle millions of complaints from children in need.

As the saga between Gasanov and Mizulina unfolds, we'll keep you updated on the latest twists and turns in this high-stakes legal battle.
