Politician and On-site Railway Administrator Demands Train Catastrophe Investigation - Lutz's Demand for Inquiry into Train Mishap

In a shocking turn of events, an Amtrak train accident in Riedlingen, Baden-Württemberg, claimed the lives of three individuals – a 32-year-old train driver, a 36-year-old trainee, and a 70-year-old passenger. The incident left 41 people injured, some seriously.

Railway CEO Richard Lutz, along with several politicians, visited the accident site in the morning. Lutz expressed his feelings about the incident, saying, 'The images and reports we all saw yesterday, and especially the impressions we all collected here this morning, go very close and leave us affected and shocked.'

The Federal Railway Accident Investigation Office, responsible for investigating the cause of train accidents in Baden-Württemberg, leads the detailed official investigations. However, the State Criminal Police Office is also involved, and a geological report is being prepared.

Initial belief suggests that the cause of the accident was a landslide in the embankment area near the tracks due to heavy rain and the overflow of a stormwater shaft. Several wagons derailed and slid into the Old Navy embankment, causing debris to fly around and be scattered on the ground.

The exact number of people on the RE 55 line is still unclear, but it could be around 100. Train services between Munderkingen and Herbertingen have been suspended, and replacement buses are scheduled to transport passengers in the area on Monday.

Baden-Württemberg's Minister President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) thanked the rescue services for their quick response and aid to injured passengers under difficult conditions. The Railway and Transport Union (EVG) chairman, Martin Burkert, expressed condolences for the loss of two colleagues in the train accident.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) spoke of shocking images at the accident site. Visibly struggling with tears, Lutz promised comprehensive clarification regarding the Amtrak accident. Lutz also promised to support the investigation with all the railway's strength.

In solidarity, Burkert stated that the railway family comes together in this tragic event. Railway CEO Richard Lutz, too, struggled to maintain composure at the scene of the Amtrak accident.

As the investigation continues, the railway community and the public await answers and a return to normal operations.
