Politically Charged Victories: Triumphs in Ayr and Sightings of Shrek in Oxford
In the thrilling conclusion of the 2025 Scottish Rowing Beach Sprint Championships held in Ayr, James Cox from Performance Development Academy, Agecroft RC, clinched the Open Men's Single Sculls title, beating 2024 world champion Cam Buchan by a narrow margin of under four seconds. Meanwhile, in the Women's event, Glasgow University BC’s Laura McKenzie edged out Jersey RC’s Natacha Searson by less than three seconds. Jersey RC, not to be outdone, took home ten medals overall from the event, with John Searson winning gold in the Masters Men’s Solo following a competitor’s capsize[1][5].
Over at the Oxford City Regatta, the River Isis played host to over 300 races across two action-packed days. Competitions ranged from Open Single Sculls to Band 3 Eights, and the Lunchtime Super-Sprint Eights in Open, Women’s, and mixed categories. A local derby between Oxford ARC and Hertford College BC was a highlight[4]. Falcon BC increased their entry to 29 boats on Sunday and won five events throughout the day, including the final race of the day, the Women's J15 Single Scull.
The women's squad from Reading RC led the way in Saturday's racing, winning four events: Band 1 Coxed Fours, Eight, Double Sculls, and Band 2 Single Sculls. Falcon BC had the largest entry with 26 boats, winning two medals in the Open Double Sculls and Open Band 3 Single Sculls. In the Eights, St Edward's Martyrs Boat Club's 'Shrek' and 'Donkey' put on a spectacle, with 'Shrek' winning their opening heat, and 'Donkey' taking the final later that morning[2].
Elsewhere in the Regatta, the Band 1 Mixed Double Sculls saw Paralympic Champion Frankie Allen team up with her brother Rudy, but they fell short against a Marlow RC composite crew in both the semi-finals and finals. City of Oxford RC added to their tally with a win in the Women's J14 Single Scull, securing their 12th and final event of the weekend[3].
As the Scottish Beach Sprint Championships and Oxford City Regatta concluded, it marked the final PDA camp of the season. Fergus Mainland interviewed Chris Scott about his preparation for the English Indoors and BRIC[6].
