Updated Climate Discourse at COP28 in Dubai

Once more, the globe gathers for a significant climate conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where over 190 nations will deliberate on a clear path towards climate restoration at the COP28 conference from November 30. This crucial meeting revolves around a comprehensive review of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement's implementation.

Regrettably, the objective of limiting global warming to 2 degrees, or even preferably 1.5 degrees, above pre-industrial levels remains unachievable due to the dwindling mitigation efforts to date.

Controversial Contexts

Wars in Ukraine and Gaza Strip

Two ongoing conflicts, in Ukraine and Gaza, have risen to the forefront of international attention. While the climate crisis may have been edged out, there are concerns that these geopolitical issues may also warm the discussion around COP28, potentially avoiding climate-centric topics.

Petteri Taalas, Head of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), compared this challenge to the previous concern revolving around the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Nevertheless, climate change remains a significant issue that's crucial to face head-on, stated Taalas.

Greta Thunberg's Activism

A gestating controversy surrounds climate activist Greta Thunberg. She's gained attention for her interwoven ideas of climate justice and the Palestinian conflict during demonstrations. Unfortunately, this has resulted in some divisiveness within the Fridays for Future movement.

Venues & Leadership

Dubai: Capital of Sustainable Dialogue

The conference is set to take place in a country with one of the highest per-capita CO2 emissions worldwide, making it a contentious choice as a host. Dubai's soaring rates surpass those of Germany by three times.

To distance herself from criticism, Conference President Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber highlights the necessity of focusing on the immediate climate challenge at hand. Moreover, she maintains that Dubai provides an opportunity to engage with oil-dependent countries to discuss their climate plans and drive sustainable transitions.

The Role of Data in Our Future

Missing Ambition

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a reduction of 43% in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in relation to 2019 is essential to meet the 1.5-degree target. However, current efforts are far from adequate. To avoid disappointing results, the international community must strengthen its commitments and bridge the ambition gap.

Upsurging Greenhouse Gas Emissions

In 2022, greenhouse gas emissions saw a 1.2% increase over 2021, setting a new record. "We are currently not on a 1.5- to 2-degree trajectory but a 2.5- to 3-degree one," says Taalas.

Urgency of Global Cooperation

To combat climate change forthrightly, extensive cooperation is necessary. Countries must work together to accelerate the phasing out of fossil fuels, deforestation, and enhanced methane controls. Additionally, substantial financing support should be provided to less-developed nations grappling with the catastrophic consequences of climate change.

Amidst these controversies and challenges, the COP28 conference remains an essential platform for the global community to collaborate and steer humanity towards a more sustainable future.
