Political Unrest in Kano APC Surfaces over Kwankwaso's Rumored Defection Intentions

The rumblings of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former Kano State Governor and NNPP presidential hopeful, potentially leapfrogging ship to the All Progressives Congress (APC) stir up a swirl of opinions among APC luminaries in Kano State.

While the Kano APC leadership seems to extend a warm welcome, many party bigwigs and youth groups express anxieties regarding the potential move. Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, the APC chairman, hinted at the possibility, stating, "All those keen on joining our esteemed party should head to their respective wards and register." However, insiders reveal that these tidings have left some APC members uneasy, particularly those coveting the 2027 governorship seat.

APC stalwarts attribute the party's revitalized vigor to Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President, who has been a driving force behind the APC's resurgence, especially its membership drive. One source underlined, "Jibrin has been instrumental in attracting many notable defectors to APC."

Yet, as Barau’s influence within the APC continues to swell, it has reportedly put the NNPP and Kwankwasiyya Movement on edge as the 2027 elections inch closer. Some members of Barau’s camp, however, are wary of the repercussions that Kwankwaso's return might bring, with one source admitting, "Kwankwaso's return may cause some stir within our ranks."

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata, has waved off Kwankwaso’s significance, stating, "Kwankwaso is no longer relevant in Kano… He is struggling to find a place within the APC, which might cause quite a commotion."

On the other hand, the APC Youth and Students Council (KASASCO) in Kano dismissed Kwankwaso's relevance, claiming that his political power has waned. Yahaya Kabo, the director-general of KASASCO, asserted, "Kwankwaso's move would bring no advantage to our party. He is merely seeking political asylum… APC isn't a shelter for washed-up political forces."

Despite these reservations, APC Chair Abdullahi Ganduje showed openness to receiving Kwankwaso, stating, "Our party embodies deepening and widening democracy… We can make room for him if he chooses to join us."

Nevertheless, the NNPP in Kano has rejected the rumors of Kwankwaso's planned defection. The state chairman, Dr. Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa, downplayed the speculation, claiming that it was baseless.
