Political tension escalates in Kericho as county assembly members prepare to impeach six cabinet ministers
In Kericho County, a political crisis deepens as the County Assembly tables fresh notices of motion to impeach six County Executive Committee (CEC) members. This escalation comes amidst a strained relationship between the Assembly and Governor Erick Mutai's administration.
Last week, Governor Mutai had called for a meeting at the International Training Centre (ICT), Browns Plantation, to discuss post-impeachment unity, development projects, and the supplementary budget. However, the Assembly's internal reconciliation is a clear message that the governor's proposed joint consultative meeting may not resolve the ongoing political issues.
The targeted CECs include those in charge of Lands, Housing and Physical Planning, Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperative Development, Finance and Economic Planning, Public Works, Roads and Transport, Health Services, Water, Energy, Environment, Forestry and Natural Resources. The motions accuse the six executives of alleged incompetence, mismanagement, and failure to deliver on their mandates.
The impeachment saga has resulted in a division within the Assembly, with 33 MCAs pushing for Governor Mutai's accountability over Sh85 million allegedly irregularly paid to 45 companies, and 18 MCAs remaining in his support. The Assembly has decided to undertake internal reconciliation to foster unity and consensus among the members.
The Assembly's decision to focus on internal reconciliation follows a meeting convened by Majority Leader Phillip Rono, where divisions within the House came to the surface. The Speaker's letter emphasized that the governor's olive branch was not enough to paper over the cracks within the Assembly.
Anthony Koskei, a governance expert, expressed concerns about the deepening political rift in Kericho County. He warned that the ongoing wrangles could potentially paralyze service delivery to residents. The latest action underscores the deepening political rift in Kericho County, with fears that the constant wrangles could indeed paralyze service delivery to residents.
The motions were moved by Chaik Ward MCA Mathew Korir, Haron Rotich (Cheptororiet/Seretut), Moses Rotich (Tendeno/ Soget) and Vincent Korir (Londiani). However, the names of the three MCAs who support the impeachment proposal of Kericho County Governor Erick Mutai remain undisclosed.
If approved, the impeachment motions will be forwarded to the executive for the CECs to appear before the assembly for impeachment proceedings before the matter is subjected to a vote. The ongoing political wrangles in Kericho County continue to escalate, potentially impacting the county's development and the wellbeing of its residents.
