"Political Rivalry Erupts": Imran Khan's Party Launches Aggressive Critique Against Bilawal Bhutto
In a surprising turn of events, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the former foreign minister and current chairman of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), has proposed the extradition of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar to India as a confidence-building measure in the context of a broader dialogue between the two countries addressing terrorism.
Bilawal's statement, made in response to a question about prosecuting the individuals for cross-border terrorism, has been met with both cautious optimism and strong opposition. The proposal could serve as a confidence-building measure if implemented, but without reciprocal willingness and trust on both sides, it risks being rejected or creating political turmoil within Pakistan.
The difficulty in prosecuting these individuals for cross-border terrorism, according to Bhutto-Zardari, lies partly with India's "non-compliance" in the legal process. He suggested that if India were willing to cooperate fully, extradition would face no hurdles. Bhutto-Zardari also claimed that Masood Azhar was in Afghanistan rather than Pakistan but expressed Pakistan's willingness to act if India could specify his location.
However, the proposal has sparked strong negative reactions within Pakistan. Hafiz Saeed’s son, Hafiz Talha Saeed, questioned whether a state representative could discuss handing over citizens to an enemy country. Sheikh Waqas Akram, spokesperson of the jailed former prime minister Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has criticized Bhutto-Zardari's proposal, stating it is detrimental to Pakistan's national security narrative and humiliates the country on international platforms. The ruling party PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) has also sharply criticized Bhutto-Zardari, accusing him of undermining national security and appeasing a hostile neighbor by suggesting extradition to India.
The proposal, if implemented, could signal a possible shift towards more openness in dialogue with India, focusing on terrorism as a key agenda, which could potentially ease tensions if both sides cooperate. However, the backlash domestically highlights the entrenched resistance against extraditing terror suspects to India, reflecting the complexities Pakistan faces in balancing internal political pressures and international diplomatic moves.
It is important to note that Hafiz Saeed, the LeT leader, is currently incarcerated in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail since 2019. He was subsequently convicted in terror financing cases for multiple years. Masood Azhar, the JeM leader, is a UN-designated global terrorist and has been proscribed by Pakistan's National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA). Both groups have been banned by NACTA.
The cases against the individuals are related to Pakistan, specifically terrorist financing. Bhutto-Zardari believes that India's cooperation would facilitate the extradition of individuals of concern. He suggested that evidence should be presented in courts, and individuals from India should testify if necessary, for the extradition process to proceed.
The proposal comes at a time when Pakistan is grappling with internal political turmoil and external diplomatic challenges. The PPP chairman's proposal has sparked a heated debate, with some viewing it as a bold step towards peace and others seeing it as a dangerous concession to India.
