Political Parties Prepare for Narok Town's Upcoming Ward By-election
The Narok Town Ward by-election, scheduled for November 27, is shaping up to be a significant political event. Six major parties – UDA, DCP, Jubilee, ODM, Safina, and Kenya Moja Movement – are participating, with more than 15 candidates vying for the seat.
The vacancy was caused by the passing of Lucas Kudate, the former MCA from ODM, who died in February of the previous year. The by-election is being viewed as a test of political strength ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has fielded George Ole Lenol as their candidate, supported by Governor Patrick ole Ntutu. However, internal fissures have been exposed within the UDA as four hopefuls – Kanyinke Kudate, Sarah Kudate, Hezron Koori, and Joseph Kamau – are all eyeing the party's nomination. Governor ole Ntutu is reportedly mediating to build consensus around a single UDA candidate to avoid a divisive nomination that could split the vote.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has fronted Isaiah Odira Agan to contest in the by-election, aiming to retain its foothold in the county. The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) is positioning itself as a fresh alternative amid growing discontent with the ruling coalition. Joshua Ole Kuputah, a respected peace ambassador, is the frontrunner in the DCP lineup, having received a formal endorsement.
The Kenya Moja Movement, a youth-led political alliance, has entered the race and unveiled Ian Duncan D'Baba as their candidate. They aim to capitalize on youth disenchantment and anti-establishment sentiment. Grace Nareyo, a 27-year-old fruit vendor, is hopeful for a generational change and finds the Kenya Moja candidate promising.
Jimmy Wanjigi's Safina Party is represented by Opondo Okuparu in the by-election. Erick Ondita is believed to enjoy backing from former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i.
The Jubilee Party is hoping to regroup in the by-election. Three aspirants – Saruni Kipukel, Francis Kavuva, and Erick Ondita – are seeking the Jubilee ticket.
Voters in Narok are engaged in heated debates about the future of the ward. Daniel Kipeen, a boda boda rider, expressed a desire for a leader who lives among the people and understands their daily struggles. Nancy Mungai, a businesswoman at Nyawera Road Narok town, expressed loyalty to the ruling coalition and the need for a single UDA candidate.
The Narok Town by-election is viewed as a test of political strength and party unity. It reflects the growing appetite for new political alternatives among the youth and the disenchanted. The outcome of this by-election could provide valuable insights into the political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
