In a recent meeting at the Awendo Green Stadium, President William Ruto announced a series of ambitious projects and initiatives aimed at boosting the development of Migori County, a region in the Nyanza area. These initiatives cover various sectors, including health, agriculture, infrastructure, housing, and the sugar sector.

In the health sector, the President allocated Sh21 billion to fund free outpatient care for all citizens at Level 2, 3, and 4 health facilities nationwide. Key health projects in Migori include the construction of Kehancha Level 4 Hospital, upgrades at Uriri Sub-County Hospital, and the equipping of Migori County Referral Hospital as part of the National Equipment Services Programme (NESP). As of August 2025, 467,927 residents (42% of the county's population) have registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA) for these services[1].

Agriculture is another focus area. The Lower Kuja Irrigation Project is underway, with the aim of transforming Migori into a food basket for the region[2].

President Ruto also emphasised his commitment to enhancing infrastructure in Migori County. He inaugurated 8 new roads in the area, improving connectivity and transport within the county[3].

The sugar sector is not left behind. Ruto promised to return by December 2025 to the South Nyanza Sugar Company to issue bonuses to farmers, with the aim of improving farmers' income and helping position the sugar sector for export status by 2027[4].

Affordable housing is also a priority. The President laid the foundation stone for the Boma Yangu Awendo Affordable Housing Project, supporting housing development in the county[5].

These initiatives indicate a multi-sectoral development focus on improving health services, boosting agriculture, upgrading infrastructure, supporting farmers financially, and providing affordable housing in Migori County.

In addition, the President pledged to spend Sh2 billion on the rural electrification programme in Migori County. The meeting was attended by several local leaders, including Walter Owino (Awendo), Junet Mohammed (Suna East), Peter Masara (Suna West), Paul Abuor (Rongo), Maisori Kitayama (Kuria East), Mathias Robi (Kuria West), and Tom Odege (Nyatike)[6].

Governor Ochilo Ayacko believes that municipalities will grow due to the affordable housing programme[7]. The President reiterated his commitment to national unity and expressed his willingness to work with Governor Ayacko and ODM leader Raila Odinga[8].

The construction of men's hostels at the Kenya Medical Training College, to accommodate 180 students, is set to begin next week[9]. Furthermore, plans are underway to make the expansion of the Lower Kuja Irrigation Scheme a reality. All stalled roads will be completed, while eight new ones will be built[10].

These developments mark a significant stride towards the President's vision of a prosperous and united Kenya.
