Saxony-Anhalt Parliamentary Factions Targeted by Hackers

The online presences of state parliamentary factions in Saxony-Anhalt have been targeted by hackers, with the websites of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Alternative for Germany (AfD), Social Democratic Party (SPD), and Green party temporarily unavailable due to denial-of-service attacks (DDoS).

The state portal of Saxony-Anhalt has also been affected, temporarily unavailable for certain user groups. The AfD and Green factions' websites are now reachable again, but the CDU, AfD, and SPD sites remain under attack.

The Federal Office for Information Security issued a notification regarding the attacks, and the CDU faction leader, Guido Heuer, suspects the attacks originated from Russia. The pro-Russian attack network "DDoSia" is believed to be on the target list.

Sebastian Striegel, the Green spokesperson for digital policy and democracy, stated that the political public in Saxony-Anhalt will not be intimidated or divided by these attacks. The Greens view these attacks as a direct attack on political will-formation, freedom of opinion, and the integrity of democratic institutions in Saxony-Anhalt.

While there is no specific information in the search results about an increase in cyber attacks on political parties in Saxony-Anhalt, it's important to note that Germany has seen instances of infrastructure sabotage and attacks, which can be related to political tensions.

In general, political parties and governments can respond to cyber threats by enhancing cybersecurity measures, cooperating with law enforcement, and educating members and staff about phishing scams and other common cyber threats.

No damage has been reported so far by any of the factions, but the Greens consider such attacks, occurring one year before the state election, to be more than just a technical malfunction. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Digital Affairs in Magdeburg has confirmed the attacks.
