Revamped Discussion on Münster's Municipal Election

With the local election looming, various politicians are gearing up for podium discussions to present their agendas. Amidst these preparations, the big question arises: how to handle the AfD? Six out of ten parties seated in Münster's city council have made their stance clear—they won't budge if the AfD gets an invite too. A joint statement from the Greens, SPD, Die Linke, Volt, Die Partei, and ÖDP aptly summarized their stance yesterday.

Their statement emphasizes their eagerness for lively discussions encompassing various political perspectives, but there's a line they won't cross—They don't wish to share a platform with a party that's entrenched in conservative extremism. They reason that the AfD poses a danger to democracy, a cherished value they're determined to safeguard, especially in the context of the upcoming election. Their past encounters indicate that the AfD has little interest in courteous, fact-based discourse; instead, they spread divisive rhetoric and inflammatory lies.

Carsten Peters from the "No Meter to the Nazis" alliance applauded this decisive move. According to ALLES MÜNSTER, Peters expressed his appreciation for this clear message extending to the city's society at large. The statement plainly indicates that these parties will take part in various discussions—with just one exception: if the AfD participates, they won't show up.

The organizers presumably wrestle with the question of whether to invite the AfD, given their scant presence in the Münster city council. Fearing a social media frenzy, these parties have endeavored to alleviate the intensity of this decision, which might otherwise lead to an almost empty podium, far from representing the city's diverse political spectrum.

Greens, SPD, and Volt, who form a minority government in the city council since the last municipal election in 2020, typically receive support from these parties. Collaboration extends to the Left and occasionally a faction comprising the ÖDP, Die PARTEI, or both. Dr. Georgios Tsakalidis, the representative of this "International Fraktion Die PARTEI/ÖDP," isn't on board with this statement. Running in the September election with a newly formed "Internationale Demokratische Liste," Tsakalidis affirmatively states his reluctance towards any AfD propaganda but prefers direct confrontation, disagreeing with a non-participation policy as long as AfD functionaries remain to stir up conflict.

Munster's FDP and CDU factions are yet to announce their position on the issue. Stay tuned for updates on their stance in the coming days.
