France is grappling with a political crisis as the government of Prime Minister François Bayrou faces a confidence vote on August 31. The vote is expected to result in a loss for Bayrou, following a series of events that have left the French political landscape in disarray.

The recent polls suggest that seven out of ten French people want Bayrou to lose the confidence vote. The opposition parties have already stated they will not support Bayrou's austerity budget, which includes measures such as reducing the number of holidays and freezing spending increases.

The political impasse in France began last summer when President Emmanuel Macron called for snap elections, resulting in a parliament fractured between three rival blocs. The Socialist Party and the left-wing firebrand Jean-Luc Melenchon's faction have both stated their decision to vote against Bayrou's government is final.

Bayrou has accused certain political forces in France of wanting to sow chaos, and specifically targeted Melenchon in his accusations. However, trade unions have urged French people to stage protests on September 18 over the 'horror show' draft budget.

Amidst the political turmoil, Bayrou has dismissed the budget proposals from the Socialist Party and is hoping to hold negotiations with the opposition parties starting from September 1. Justice minister Gerald Darmanin, on the other hand, has called on political forces to find a compromise.

The situation in France has been further complicated by the rise of the right-wing National Rally (RN), with recent polls suggesting support for the party has been steadily rising. RN deputy leader Sebastien Chenu has stated that if new parliamentary elections were called, RN would fight to obtain an absolute majority in parliament's lower house.

The political faction with the highest recent increase in support in France is the New Popular Federation (NFP) with a +0.5% increase in the last 30 days and +5.4% in the last 3 months. In contrast, RN has a slight decrease of -0.4% in the last 30 days and a +0.2% in 3 months.

The political crisis in France has raised concerns about the legacy of the Fifth Republic's founding father Charles De Gaulle. Justice minister Gerald Darmanin expressed his concern that De Gaulle's legacy may be at risk due to the current political deadlock.

As the political crisis deepens, French Prime Minister François Bayrou called for a confidence vote on September 8 and sat down for an interview with four news channels on August 31, in an attempt to rally support for his government. However, with the opposition parties united against him and the French public largely disapproving of his austerity measures, Bayrou's future as Prime Minister remains uncertain.
