The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has taken a significant step in its ongoing fight against corruption and financial irregularities by filing two cases against 11 individuals, including former Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain and Padma Bank Chairman Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat. The cases, filed on 16th July, highlight a pattern of fraud and misuse of power, amounting to an alleged embezzlement of Tk71 crore.
The first case involves a misappropriation of at least Tk66.51 crore, with Tk14.07 crore in advance payments, Tk2 crore in hidden construction costs, and Tk52.44 crore concealed overall. The accused, including Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat's wife Anjuman Ara Sahid, son Rahib Safwan Sarafat Chowdhury, Tarek Riaz Khan, SK Mehedi Hasan, Dalia Chowdhury, Farhana Monem, Rimon Karmaker, Sajid Haque, and Amin Nawer Chowdhury, are alleged to have colluded to lease Padma Bank's head office and Gulshan-2 branch to a residential building, Finance Square, violating Bangladesh Bank directives.
In the second case, the accused are accused of illegally converting a residential plot into a commercial one by abusing their authority and unlawfully influencing Rajuk procedures. The case involves at least Tk4.97 crore in laundered assets, with Nafeez Sarafat, his wife Anjuman Ara Sahid, son Rahib Safwan Sarafat Chowdhury, and former Housing Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain among the accused.
The Director General (Prevention) of ACC, Md Akhter Hossain, made the announcement to reporters at the ACC head office, stating that these cases are part of the ACC's ongoing efforts to combat corruption and financial irregularities in Bangladesh's public and private sectors. The cases are under investigation, and the accused individuals are being charged with embezzlement.
