From Rags to Riches: The Remarkable Journey of South Korea's New President, Lee Jae-myung

Lee Jae-myung's extraordinary journey to the South Korean presidency mirrors his nation's phenomenal transformation from grinding poverty to a global economic powerhouse.

Born in 1963, Lee was part of a generation that witnessed South Korea's economic leap, with the country's GDP per capita comparable to sub-Saharan African nations at the time of his birth. Tales of his humble beginnings and resilience have become an integral part of his political narrative.

A Life Filled with Struggle

Lee, a charismatic and outspoken figure, is often credited with his humble beginnings shaping his progressive beliefs. He dropped out of school in his early teens and took up factory work to support his family in Seongnam, a satellite city of Seoul. At 15, a factory accident left him with a lifelong disability, permanently affecting the movement in his left arm.

Despite these setbacks, Lee persevered and eventually earned admission to Chung-Ang University in Seoul to study law, passing the bar exam four years later.

Champing for the Underdog

Throughout his law career, Lee championed the rights of the marginalized, advocating for victims of industrial accidents and evicted residents due to urban redevelopment projects.

A Politician is Born

Lee made his foray into politics in 2006, with an unsuccessful bid for the Seongnam mayorship. However, his determination kept him from being sidelined for long. He won the mayoral seat in 2010 and went on to earn re-election in 2014. From 2018 to 2021, he served as governor of Gyeonggi, the country's most populous province, before entering the national stage as the Democratic Party candidate during the 2022 presidential election.

Lee's progressive ideologies, coupled with his pragmatic approach, allowed him to deliver one of his party's best parliamentary election results, delivering 173 seats in the 300-seat National Assembly in 2021.

Yet, Lee's political career has been marked by a series of scandals. From allegations of election law violations to charges of breach of trust, Lee has survived several legal cases, ensuring he enters office with a significant amount of political capital.

A Politician for the People

As the newly elected president, Lee has promised to prioritize economic growth, proposing initiatives like a major boost in investment in artificial intelligence, the introduction of a four-and-a-half-day work week, and tax deductions for parents based on the number of children they have.

On foreign affairs, Lee's stance is balancing the need to mend relations with North Korea and push for its denuclearization with the importance of maintaining the US-Korea security alliance, without alienating China and Russia.

"I would call him a progressive pragmatist. I don't think he will stick to any consistent progressive lines or even conservative lines. Critics call him a kind of manipulator; his supporters call him flexible," Yong-chool Ha, director of the Center for Korea Studies at the University of Washington, explained.

"He is a survivor."

As Lee takes office against a backdrop of deep political polarization and social divisions in South Korea, the world will be watching to see how he navigates this volatile international environment shaped by conflicts and shifted geopolitical alliances. His election marks an unforgettable comeback for Lee, who, despite facing numerous challenges, has shown an extraordinary resilience befitting his origin story.
