Political figure Hsu Kuo-yung appointed as the new leader of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has announced that former minister of the interior Hsu Kuo-yung will replace Lin Yu-chang as the party's secretary-general. This decision comes after the failure of a mass legislative recall campaign on July 26, which did not result in the removal of any KMT lawmakers from office.
Hsu Kuo-yung, a Taiwanese politician and media personality, has served as the Secretary-General of the DPP since 2025. In this role, he oversees party operations, coordinates strategy, and supports the party leadership, a position that becomes particularly important given the DPP's political environment in 2025. The party retained executive control but lost its legislative majority, necessitating strong internal coordination.
The mass legislative recall campaign, launched by civic groups and backed by the DPP, targeted seven additional KMT legislators in the second round of recall votes, scheduled to take place on Saturday. However, the KMT, along with the opposition Taiwan People's Party, will continue to maintain control of the legislature following the recall votes, as all 24 of its lawmakers on the ballot remained in office.
President William Lai, chairman of the DPP, is expected to announce Hsu's appointment after the second round of recall votes. The source of the information about Hsu's selection is a person familiar with the matter.
Lin Yu-chang, the previous secretary-general of the DPP, resigned following the failure of the mass legislative recall campaign. Hsu had previously served as a legislator and a political program host since 2023, before being appointed as the Secretary-General of the DPP in 2025.
This change in leadership comes at a critical time for the DPP, as they navigate the aftermath of the failed recall campaign and prepare for future political challenges. With Hsu Kuo-yung at the helm, the party hopes to regroup and strengthen its position ahead of upcoming elections.
