Political figure Blum seeking another term in the U.S. Congress
Former Republican Congressman Rod Blum, a businessman from Dubuque, has announced his intention to return to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2027. This decision comes after the seat in Iowa's second congressional district was left vacant when current representative Ashley Hinson announced her run for the U.S. Senate.
Blum served in the House from 2014 to 2018, including the first two years of President Trump's first term. During his tenure, he was re-elected in 2016 with 54 percent of the vote. Blum was also a prominent supporter of Trump, stating he was proud to stand with him then and serve on the leadership team for Trump's 2024 Iowa campaign.
Blum's business background is in software, as he is the owner of Digital Canal. He lost his 2018 bid for re-election to Democrat Abby Finkenauer but is now aiming to regain the seat.
The primary elections for Iowa's second congressional district will take place in 2026, due to the vacancy caused by Hinson's Senate run. Three Democrats and two other Republicans, Cartwright and Schminke, have also announced their candidacies for the district. The general elections for the district will take place in 2027, assuming no special election is called.
The outcome of the 2026 primaries and 2027 general elections in Iowa's second congressional district could potentially lead to a change in representation. The winner of the 2027 elections will serve a two-year term starting in January 2027.
At the time of writing, no current member of the House of Representatives has been announced as a candidate for the U.S. Senate. The race for Iowa's second congressional district is heating up, with Blum vying for a return to Washington and new representatives eager to contest the elections.
