Political Discourse Across the Nation |

In the realm of global politics, the relationship between leaders and the media has been under scrutiny. This analysis examines the tactics employed by political figures in Hungary, Serbia, Russia, and the United States, with a particular focus on media control and suppression.

In Hungary, the European Parliament declared in 2022 that the country could no longer be considered a democracy due to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's systematic capture of democratic institutions and moves against independent media. Orbán's leadership style, revered by many conservatives in the U.S., has seen him build a media empire subject to his party's orders. Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders states that Orbán's Fidesz party controls about 80% of Hungary's media market.

Orbán's tactics mirror those of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who learned from Orbán to exert strong control over the media. Trump suggested revoking the licenses of networks that provide what he considered "only bad publicity." Hungary's media authority, staffed entirely by Orbán's party nominees, has threatened nonrenewal of broadcast frequencies to keep outlets in line and forced the liberal-leaning station Klubradió off the air.

Trump's campaign against the media extended to media figures he believed were overly critical of him. He celebrated the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's show and foreshadowed the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr launched an investigation into CBS and opened probes into public broadcasting networks. Disney-owned ABC News agreed to a $15 million settlement to resolve a Trump lawsuit.

In Serbia, populist President Aleksandar Vucic has faced accusations of curtailing media freedoms. Journalist safety has worsened due to political pressure, public smear campaigns, financial pressure, censorship, abusive lawsuits, and daily death threats.

Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, has consolidated control over national television and expanded restrictions on civil society, independent journalism, and online platforms. Putin's crackdown has intensified after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Orbán has made hostility towards the press central to his political brand. Trump, too, waged an aggressive campaign against the media since taking office, similar to authoritarian leaders he has often praised. The Kimmel suspension highlighted Trump's broader efforts to pressure journalists, media companies, and comedians to align with his views.

In a surprising turn of events, CBS canceled Stephen Colbert's show just days after he had criticized the network's settlement of a lawsuit filed by Trump. Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos killed an editorial endorsement of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration.

These developments underscore the need for vigilance in preserving media freedom and independence, lest we see a further erosion of democratic values.
