The UK played host to a historic state visit by US President Donald Trump, overseen by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The visit, marked by grand ceremonies and high-profile meetings, aimed to strengthen transatlantic ties and signal ongoing cooperation between the US and UK.
During the visit, several significant agreements and investments were announced. US tech giants and financial institutions have pledged a total of £150 billion (nearly €104 billion) in investments in the UK over several years. These investments are expected to boost the UK's technology sector and foster collaborations in the nuclear and aerospace sectors through the "Technology Prosperity Agreement."
One of the most notable investments came from UK pharmaceutical giant GSK, which announced plans to invest $30 billion in the US. Similarly, Microsoft has committed $30 billion (€25.5 billion) in AI investments over the next four years, while Blackstone plans to invest £90 billion (nearly €104 billion) in British projects over the next decade.
The economic agreement signed by Trump and Starmer is the largest investment package of its kind in British history. Trump praised the "unbreakable bond" between the US and the UK and urged European countries to stop buying Russian oil, expressing disappointment with the behaviour of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, not all discussions between the leaders were smooth. Starmer and Trump had a disagreement regarding the UK's plan to recognize a Palestinian state. The Labour leader also received advice from Trump to stop illegal migration in the UK, even if it means deploying the army.
Despite these differences, Starmer and Trump were reported to "truly respect each other." An evening state banquet followed, where British King Charles III praised Trump's "personal commitment" to peace. The First Lady, Melania Trump, joined Princess Kate to meet Scout children and visited Queen Mary's dollhouse with Queen Camilla.
The state visit included a formal reception by the royal family at Windsor Castle, a joint carriage ride, and a military ceremony involving around 120 horses and 1300 soldiers. Trump described his second state visit to the UK as "one of the greatest honors of my life."
Starmer emphasized that the agreement is "transformative," signalling a new era of cooperation between the US and UK. The agreements and investments aim to highlight strong transatlantic ties despite political differences, particularly through a billion-dollar technology deal that signals ongoing cooperation between the US and UK.
