Political clash emerging between CDU and FDP over proposed policies in Goch: are these merely election tactics?

Pulling No Punches in Goch Politics

The political landscape in Goch is heating up, as the municipal election looms just over two months away. The air is thick with tension, with at least five factions squaring off, trading verbal jabs in public. The catalyst for this political spat is the five proposals tabled by CDU and FDP in the council meeting on June 5th, which they deem as "forward-thinking."

These proposals, according to CDU and FDP, provide "solid solutions" to the widespread discontent many Goch residents harbor about their city. However, Frank Thon, SPD chairman, labels this move by the Christian Democrats and Liberals as a "transparent election ploy." He adds, "The dominant faction can indeed propose measures and then complain when, after extensive budget discussions, they're rejected without due warning."

The CDU and FDP proposals aimed to bolster infrastructure, elevate the quality of life, increase climate and environmental protection, and offer modern work and leisure opportunities. Various ideas and demands from these proposals were met with rejection by BFG, SPD, Greens, and AfD, leading to criticism from the applicants.

One proposal centered on the urgent need to renovate Goch's worn-out streets, including the reconstruction of the Kesseler Seeweg, notorious for its dismal state for years. Residents frequently voice concerns regarding potholes, cracked roads, and a lack of safety for cyclists in the area. CDU and FDP sought to address these issues head-on.

Cleanliness within the city was another focus. Residents are often disturbed by littered sidewalks and squares. The acquisition of a city vacuum cleaner was proposed as a means to combat this problem, utilizing modern technology to significantly improve cleanliness and the city's appearance.

CDU and FDP also aimed to revamp the city center through strategic investments. This beautification project would have included new, accessible seating areas, superior lighting for enhanced safety and quality of stay, planting 100 trees in empty pits, free Wi-Fi, and supporting local gastronomy with outdoor furniture. The rejection of these proposals leaves CDU and FDP perplexed. "The citizens of Goch have time and again voiced their concerns about the city's lack of cleanliness, appalling street conditions, and a neglected city center," they argue.

The majority factions, BFG, SPD, Greens, and AfD, have allegedly cemented stagnation, according to Marc Groesdonk and Michael Thissen, the leaders of CDU and FDP, who accuse the opposition of blocking progress.

Michael Thissen, Chairperson of FDP, declared: "We advocated for constructive, well-thought-out, and immediately implementable improvements for the city of Goch. It's a slap in the face to all those yearning for change that BFG, SPD, Greens, and AfD have obstructed these improvements despite our offers for compromise during the debate."

The Green Party's Confusing Voting Behavior

The voting behavior of the Green Party is equally perplexing. Those who claim to champion climate and environmental protection should not only have approved but also proposed the initiative to plant 100 trees in the city center, argues Marc Groesdonk, Chairperson of CDU. He laments, "It's disheartening that pragmatic and eco-friendly proposals like planting 100 trees did not win the majority of votes. Those bearing the Green name should also practice green politics."

Michael Thissen, the CDU and FDP's mayoral candidate, also weighed in on the issue: "It's disheartening that we didn't manage to implement these positive changes for our city in collaboration with the other factions. The people of Goch expect us not to engage in debate but to act. These proposals served as a signal of our intentions - unfortunately, the opportunity for positive change was missed."

BFG, SPD, Greens, and AfD: Party Politics over Progress

In a joint statement, BFG, Greens, and SPD deliver harsh criticism of the proposals both in form and content.

"These proposed measures have an overall cost of several million euros," asserts SPD faction chair Willi Ratsak. Such motions should ideally be presented during the budget negotiations. The justification for the motion states, in essence, that the eight weeks between its submission and approval of the budget were insufficient to read, understand, and develop well-reasoned amendments. "Anyone who considers carnival and federal elections more important than the city's budget acts recklessly and irresponsibly," emphasizes Jerome Vermaten, mayoral candidate of BFG. He concludes that the rejection of the budget reflects the priorities of the CDU and FDP.

Inexplicable: "Key portions of the motions have already been decided"

Furthermore, BFG, Greens, and SPD criticize the lack of counter-funding and the fact that crucial elements of the motions have already been agreed upon. "The renovation measures for Schützenweg and Thielenstraße have long been decided. However, they were delayed due to construction work at the Astrid-Lindgren School," explains the administration.

Content-wise, BFG, B90/Die Grünen, and SPD share some common ground. It's about serious, factual politics for the city and its citizens, and not about party interests or election campaigning.

Green Party's Response: Urban Development Concept Coordination Required

"Of course, we support the greening of the city center and enhancing the appeal of Voßstraße. These measures should align with the integrated urban development concept (ISEK), a framework for the city's future design," says Dr. Rose Wecker of Alliance 90/The Greens. "The Green faction wants to continue making the city greener and more livable, but the measures must be synchronized," emphasizes the Green Party leader, Kathrin Krystof.
