Political brawl erupts at Kisii funeral, as legislators engage in violent altercations

A political disagreement between two Members of Parliament (MPs) has caused a stir in Kisii politics, as the altercation between Japhet Nyakundi, the local MP of Kitutu Chache North, and Kibagendi, MP of Kitutu Chache South, disrupted the funeral of Salome Nyaboke, mother of former Kisii Governor James Ongwae.

The incident, which took place at Sensi village, began when Kibagendi eulogized Nyaboke but made a political statement that irritated Nyakundi. Kibagendi, a critic of President William Ruto and a politico of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, expressed his advocacy for Matiang'i's presidency in 2027. This did not sit well with Nyakundi, who became angry and tried to snatch Kibagendi's microphone during the ceremony.

A scuffle ensued, with Nyakundi attempting to shove Kibagendi off the podium. However, the intervention of James Ongwae, the former Kisii Governor, managed to calm the situation and separate the two MPs.

The altercation has been a source of controversy, with social media followers criticizing the rivalry between Nyakundi and Kibagendi as juvenile. Many have expressed their disapproval of the MPs fighting at a funeral, considering it a shame and a let-down to their electorate.

In a post on social media, Kibagendi accused Nyakundi of suggesting that roads in Kitutu Chache South were being constructed due to Nyakundi's intervention in Kitutu Chache North. Nyakundi, on the other hand, stated that he works for President Ruto and would always defend him.

The continuation of the altercation on social media has earned the MPs rebukes from their followers. An angry James Ongwae expressed his disappointment about the continuation of the altercation, calling for a more mature approach to political disagreements.

Fredrick Ombaba, a Facebook commentator, also expressed his disapproval, stating that the MPs' behavior was unbecoming of representatives of the people.

This incident serves as a reminder that political disagreements should be handled with maturity and respect, especially in public settings and during moments of mourning. The people of Kisii are hoping for a resolution to this ongoing feud and a return to peaceful political discourse.
