Political associate vanishes without trace for 22 days in Venezuela
In the heart of South America, the disappearance of opposition activist Nancy Camacaro has sent shockwaves through Venezuela's political landscape. Missing since July 21, 2025, Camacaro's whereabouts remain unknown, with state authorities yet to provide any official information regarding her fate[1].
Camacaro, who was active during the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, has become a symbol of the broader pattern of political repression and state-sanctioned human rights violations under President Nicolás Maduro’s government. Her case mirrors that of other activists like Martha Grajales, who have been detained and faced politically charged prosecutions[1].
The United Nations bodies have been alerted about Camacaro's forced disappearance, adding weight to the growing international concern about the situation in Venezuela. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has characterised these actions as "state terrorism," highlighting the lack of transparency and refusal of state institutions to take reports related to attacks or disappearances[1].
As of August 4, Foro Penal (FP) counted 807 people detained for political reasons in Venezuela, with 803 being adults and four being minors. Of these, 712 are men and 95 are women. Among them, 638 are civilians and 169 are military[2].
Camacaro's health conditions require continuous medical treatment, with hypertension, chronic back and arm pain, and sudden dizziness being some of her health problems[1]. Her well-being is of paramount importance, as her detention and forced disappearance are clear violations of human rights, contrary to the Constitution and international norms.
The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, urging Venezuelan authorities to provide answers and ensure the safety and well-being of all political prisoners, including Nancy Camacaro. The call for transparency and adherence to human rights standards grows louder as the days pass, with the hope that justice will prevail and Camacaro will be found safe and returned to her loved ones.
