A chilling incident left Colombians stunned as Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, a rising political star and potential 2026 presidential contender, was gunned down at a rally in Bogotá's Fontibón district.
With a critical condition, Uribe, 39, a member of the opposition Democratic Center party, remains hospitalized according to his wife, María Claudia Tarazona. Severely wounded, Tarazona revealed a heart-wrenching message on his X account, "He's fighting for his life."
The tragic event unfolded as Uribe addressed supporters in El Golfito Park, when assailants closed in from behind and emptied their magazines. Footage circulating on social media displays Uribe bleeding profusely while event-goers provide emergency first aid.
Furious over the "serious attack," the Democratic Center Party issued a statement expressing their anger yet remained tight-lipped about the senator's condition.
Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed authorities detained a main suspect, but hinted at possible involvement of others. Sánchez visited Uribe in the hospital and expressed full investigative commitment.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed his solidarity with Uribe's family during a recorded message, stating, "I don't know how to ease your pain. It is the pain of a mother lost and a homeland."
Taking the stage later in the evening, Petro announced the alleged shooter as a minor. In reassuring tones, Petro vowed to focus on uncovering the criminal masterminds behind the attack. "For now, all we have are hypotheses," Petro stated, adding a review of security measures would be conducted at future events.
It later emerged that the culprit is a 14-year-old boy who participated in a government program for high-risk youths. Known for his tumultuous personality, he allegedly confessed, "I’m sorry, I did it for the money, for my family." The minor stands charged with attempted murder and illegal weapon possession.
