In a heartwarming tribute, renowned fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski has been awarded the Złoty Medal "Zasłuzony Kulturze Gloria Artis" - the highest Polish distinction in the field of culture. The ceremony took place on May 7, 2017, and the medal is a testament to Sapkowski's significant contributions to Poland's cultural heritage.

The creator of the beloved Witcher series, Sapkowski has remained somewhat detached from the phenomenally popular game series, preferring to focus on his written works. However, his influence on the gaming industry, particularly the Witcher franchise, is undeniable. CD Projekt Red's CEO, Adam Badowski, has often spoken of the series' roots in Sapkowski's original books. Badowski claims that the grumpiness Sapkowski often displays in public is simply a front, and that his work has been instrumental in shaping the fantasy genre for gamers worldwide.

The Gold Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture is a medal handed out by the Polish Ministry of Culture to artists who have made significant contributions to the country's heritage. The medal, which wouldn't look out of place in The Witcher series, was presented to Sapkowski on September 15, 2025. On receiving the medal, Sapkowski's demeanor resembled someone who had been told the restaurant's special of the day had run out.

Polish culture minister Marta Cienkowska took to Twitter to express her admiration for Sapkowski's legacy and its continuation in readers, gamers, viewers, and the culture at large. CD Projekt Red also shared their appreciation for Sapkowski's work, with Badowski tweeting about Sapkowski's influence on fantasy fans and the gaming industry.

Joshua Wolens, a writer known for his work in Vice, Fanbyte, and the Financial Times, has written extensively on various games, including visual novels and Assassin's Creed. Wolens, who has a strong interest in CRPGs, immersive sims, and games with ambitious designs, has also penned a tribute to Sapkowski and the impact of his work. As the Witcher 3 continues to captivate audiences, and with rumours of a potential Witcher 4 and The Witcher season 4 on the horizon, Sapkowski's work remains as relevant as ever. Despite his reservations about the game series, it's clear that Sapkowski's influence on the world of fantasy will continue to be felt for years to come.

In a 2017 interview, Sapkowski advised novice writers to learn something profitable like repairing computers and forget about writing. However, it seems that Sapkowski's own words of wisdom have proven to be less than reliable, as his work has captivated millions and cemented his place as a legend in the world of fantasy literature.
