In a bold move, Polish President Andrzej Duda called upon U.S. President Donald Trump to crank up the heat on Russia, hoping to pressure the Kremlin into halting its relentless war against Ukraine. According to Politico, this all went down on May 5.

Duda believes the U.S. has some serious economic weapons that can bring Russia to its knees, claiming that Trump is the only one with the power to snuff out Vladimir Putin's autocratic dreams.

"America's economic arsenal is a formidable force," Duda told the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network. "Trump wields the appropriate tools to sever Putin's lifelines."

He further emphasized that Trump can unleash a torrent of economic pain on Russia, threatening Putin's interests and forcing him to the negotiation table.

While Trump has flirted with the idea of slapping tariffs and sanctions on Russia, he hasn't yet made any concrete moves in that direction since taking office. In fact, shortly after his inauguration, Trump gave Moscow a premonition of what was to come, ominously stating that the U.S. could go easy or hard on Russia.

Recent developments seem to have given Trump a clearer picture of Putin's stance, and Duda believes the American president is now in a position to demand serious negotiations. Kyiv has long sought Washington's assistance in ratcheting up the pressure on Moscow. Trump himself has hinted at Russia's reluctance to engage in meaningful talks, implying that Putin might be eavesdropping on him and is unwilling to put an end to the war.

"Trump's got the goods," Duda said. "He's seen Putin's true colors. The President of the United States has the means to force Russia to toe the line."

Ukraine has signaled a willingness to introduce a 30-day ceasefire, provided Russia reciprocates. However, Moscow has doggedly refused a full truce unless Ukraine surrenders to its demands, such as halting all foreign military aid.

Support for tougher measures against Russia is growing in Washington. Senator Lindsey Graham, for instance, revealed that at least 72 U.S. senators are ready to back severe sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia and nations investing in Russian energy exports. The proposed bill includes punitive measures such as tariffs of 500% on imports from countries buying Russian oil, gas, or uranium if Putin shuns diplomacy.

Trump hinted at the possibility of implementing additional sanctions if Russia fails to strike a peace deal with Ukraine during an interview with NBC News on May 4.

The U.S. has been backing Ukraine's economic recovery and reconstruction. Through initiatives like the United States-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund, the U.S. is urging Russia to respect Ukraine's sovereignty while also securing its own interests. Furthermore, the U.S. has signed a mineral deal with Ukraine, which includes a joint investment fund to support Ukraine's reconstruction and enhance its stability. These actions reflect the U.S.'s commitment to Ukraine and symbolize its resolve to isolate Russia economically.
