Teamwork on the Frontlines: Germany and Poland Collaborate to Tackle Migration Issues

It's a united stand on migration policy for Germany and Poland, both countries underlining the necessity of reinforced protection for the EU's external borders and decisive action against illegal immigration. Following a meeting between Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and Polish counterpart Tomasz Siemoniak in Warsaw, the duo agreed that migrants are being manipulated as part of a hybrid war orchestrated by Russia and Belarus.

Found in the thick of it, Dobrindt and Siemoniak believe that countries facing migration pressure should be allowed to implement extraordinary measures to stabilize their asylum and social systems. With Siemoniak stating, as reported by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, that protecting the EU's external borders and combating illegal migration are shared priorities for Germany and Poland, Dobrindt echoed the sentiment, emphasizing, "Only together can we further contain irregular migration to Europe."

Border controls have tightened since May, with Dobrindt stepping up checks and the possibility of rejecting asylum seekers at the border upon taking office a month ago. Despite a preliminary ruling by Berlin's Administrative Court that deemed the rejection of three Somalis at a border control in Frankfurt (Oder) on May 9 as unlawful, Germany continues this practice. The three were sent back to Poland.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk previously criticized this policy shift during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's (CDU) inaugural visit to Warsaw. "Germany will let whoever it wants in. Poland will only accept those we deem appropriate," Tusk said. To ease the impact of border controls on local communities and cargo transport, the ministers have vowed to make the situation as bearable as possible for all road users.

The meeting in Warsaw also tackled the protection of Ukrainian refugees, the battle against crime, and terrorist threats. In the grand scheme, both countries are reinforcing their collaboration to address migration challenges, focusing on border security and the prevention of illegal migration while discussing potential border policy adjustments.
