Alfons Jan Nagorski, born on January 27, 1888, in Włocławek, a Polish city within the Russian Empire, embarked on a remarkable journey that would make him a significant figure in Polish military aviation.
Nagorski received his education in a trade school in his hometown and later attended a school in Odessa that prepared students for military service. He graduated in 1909 at the age of 21. After his education, Nagorski joined the Imperial Russian Navy as an aviator, where he undertook many difficult missions.
One of his most notable achievements was during an Arctic mission in 1914, for which he was awarded the Order of Saint Stanislaus. This mission saw Nagorski flying deep into the North Pole in search of three lost Russian explorers, making him the first aviator to do so.
Nagorski's bravery was further demonstrated during World War I, where he participated in numerous patrol missions and was awarded five medals for his service. One of his most daring feats during this time was performing the first loop with a flying boat.
Nagorski also fought in the Russian Civil War for the Red Army. Despite being declared dead due to some mistakes during this period, he survived and showed himself at a lecture on polar exploration. After the Russian Civil War, Nagorski lived in Poland, where he worked as an engineer.
In 1958, Nagorski published a book about his flights over the Arctic, providing a fascinating account of his adventures and contributions to aviation. Tragically, Nagorski passed away on June 9, 1976, in Warsaw, Poland, at the age of 88.
