In a tragic turn of events, one University of Delaware student, aged 24, lost their life after being struck by an overdue U-Haul rented van near the university campus. A second student is left fighting for their life after being seriously injured, according to reports from FOX 29 Philadelphia.
This heart-wrenching incident unfolded on April 29, when the Newark Police Department spotted the long-overdue and unreturned U-Haul van parked on East Main Street around 4:30 p.m. The vehicle had not been returned since its due date of March 18, and had been categorized as an "unauthorized use vehicle" prior to this encounter.
As the officers tried to apprehend the two individuals in the van, they sped off, careening over a curb and colliding with a police vehicle. In their reckless flight, the van struck two pedestrians standing beside a parked vehicle, as well as several other parked cars before finally coming to a halt.
Tragically, the University of Delaware graduate student was pronounced dead at the scene. Another 24-year-old student sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving care at Christiana Hospital. Three individuals were admitted to hospitals with injuries that, whilst severe, are not considered life-threatening, while three others were treated for minor injuries on-site.
The driver of the U-Haul van, identified as Gordon Turner, was also critically injured in the crash and has been hospitalized. Turner is wanted as a fugitive in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, making this a cross-state case. His passenger has not been charged as of yet.
The University of Delaware has offered its condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring the safety of its community. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident, with further charges expected as the inquiry progresses.
