Police Operations in PP Koblenz Amid Adverse Weather Conditions (Snow/Ice) (As of 10:30 a.m.)

Snowy Sunday Causes Traffic Disruptions in Rhineland-Palatinate

Snowfall in the higher elevations of northern Rhineland-Palatinate during the night into Sunday, 5th January 2025, led to a series of weather-related traffic accidents.

The snowfall turned into freezing rain, making roads icy and treacherous. The B 262 between the A 48 (Mayen interchange) and Mayen was the scene of a major incident, where a semi-trailer slid off the road and into a ditch around 05:00. The truck accident resulted in the full closure of the B 262 in the direction of Mayen for three hours, between 06:30 and 09:45.

The fire department was responsible for removing the access blockage caused by the semi-trailer accident. Traffic was light during the night and early morning hours due to it being Sunday, but the incident caused significant disruptions. The truck had to be laboriously recovered by a towing service.

Several accidents occurred from 04:00, mainly consisting of minor damage, particularly in the higher elevations of the Eifel and Westerwald. Isolated cases of snow breakage were reported in these areas, including near the Nurburgring. In the Cochem area, one person was lightly injured.

By 10:30, a total of 17 weather-related traffic accidents had been reported in the Koblenz police precinct area. The traffic disruptions remained manageable due to adapted driving behavior and the deployment of clearing services. Road maintenance and volunteer fire departments were actively working to clear branches and trees from the roadway.

It's important to note that the total number of weather-related traffic accidents in the Koblenz police precinct area by 10:30 remained at 17.

The weather-related deployments were slightly above the normal deployment level, but the traffic disruptions were effectively managed, ensuring the safety of the public. Stay safe on the roads during this wintry weather.
