Consenting Police Inspection of the Federal Highway 8 by Luxembourg Police and German Federal Police Directorate Koblenz Announced Jointly

Police of Luxembourg and Federal Police Directorate Koblenz announce a joint operation on the A8 motorway, where consensual inspections by the Federal Police will take place.

The Federal Police Directorate Koblenz, in conjunction with the Grand Ducal Police of Luxembourg, has announced a new interim procedure for handling Schengen internal border controls starting August 1, 2025. This decision is part of a coordinated, more flexible approach to temporarily reinstate Schengen internal border controls between Luxembourg and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Under this new procedure, the Federal Police will be responsible for implementing the coordinated, flexible procedures on the Bundesautobahn 8 (BAB 8) between Germany and Luxembourg. Vehicles to be controlled will be diverted from the flowing traffic to the control location at the Moseltal rest area, eliminating the single-lane traffic and the speed limit of 20 km/h caused by the border control.

The agreement aims to reduce traffic impact while combating cross-border crime. The interim procedure only affects the controls of the Federal Police on the BAB 8. It allows the Federal Police to identify vehicles relevant for control on Luxembourgish territory and control them on German territory outside the BAB 8.

The Western branch of the Autobahn GmbH is involved in the Schengen internal border controls, and there are no effects on the return of persons to whom global entry to Germany is refused. The consented procedure further strengthens police cooperation with Luxembourg, a fact that was previously agreed upon and not affected by this new information.

The Schengen internal border controls are being carried out immediately behind the border bridge at Schengen, Germany. This innovative procedure is subject to continuous evaluation to ensure its effectiveness and efficiency.

For inquiries, the Federal Police Directorate Koblenz can be contacted at [email protected] or by telephone at 0261/399-0. The Mosel Bridge at Schengen remains under traffic restrictions, but it is important to note that this new information does not mention any changes to this restriction.

This interim procedure is a significant step towards enhancing border control and maintaining smooth traffic flow, reinforcing the commitment of both countries to a secure and efficient Schengen area.
