Police in Recklinghausen/Bottrop district collaborate with local youth in sports training initiatives - a bonding session for law enforcement and youngsters.

On September 16, 2025, the Police Headquarters in Recklinghausen will host the "Sports Connect" event at the Martin-Luther-Europaschule in Herten. This innovative initiative, aiming to promote mutual understanding and dialogue, has been met with positive responses from participating students and within the police.

The central part of the event is a sporting, interactive scenario where young people solve a fictional crime case. This engaging format, which was successfully pilot-tested in 2024 at a school in Recklinghausen, is designed to strengthen young people's trust in the police through sporting activities.

Collaboration with teachers and school social workers will be ongoing for the continuous evaluation and further development of the 'Sports Connect' measure. Teachers view the 'Sports Connect' format as a modern form of police work with a preventive side effect, as it seeks to promote social integration and defuse violence and conflict potential early on.

Police President Friederike Zurhausen explains that the 'Sports Connect' action demonstrates the police as an active part of society. Encounters during the 'Sports Connect' event take place on an equal footing, free from prejudices or hierarchies.

The 'Sports Connect' project sparks interest in the police profession, a welcome synergy effect given the need to recruit new talent in the public service. The event's motto is "Sports Connect", symbolising the aim to connect young people with the police through shared experiences and mutual understanding.

Media representatives are invited to cover the 'Sports Connect' event on September 16, 2025, at Martin Luther Europa School in Herten. Registration for the press event is required by September 12, 2025. The format could be permanently established in the crime prevention measures catalog of the local police department, marking a significant step towards sustainable prevention structures in schools.

Police officers report authentic conversations and palpable appreciation during the 'Sports Connect' event. The goal of the event is to promote social integration and defuse violence and conflict potential early on, fostering a safer and more understanding community for all.
