Police in Bavaria show no signs of complacency despite good crime statistics
In a recent statement, Thorsten Grimm, the 1st deputy state chairman of DPolG in Bavaria, highlighted the potential implications of decriminalizing marijuana consumption for the police force. Grimm emphasized that this move would mean more work, more control activity, and more prevention work for the police.
Amidst growing concerns about public safety, DPolG is demanding far-reaching legal powers to clarify crimes in public spaces. This demand is not directly related to their concerns about non-German suspects or their advocacy for a restrictive migration and refugee policy.
The DPolG is also advocating for the strengthening of border controls, repatriations, and deportations, a stance that is independent of their position on the marijuana consumption law.
Incidents such as the attack on the Israeli consulate in Munich in September 2024 and the attack in Aschaffenburg in January 2025 have left citizens with an uneasy feeling. However, the DPolG's stance on the marijuana consumption law is not influenced by these incidents.
The DPolG is not advocating for the reversal of the marijuana consumption law based on perceived improvements in safety, as stated by Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann. Instead, they believe that the decrease in offenses registered in the marijuana consumption area is solely due to the decriminalization.
Despite the assurances of a safe life in Bavaria presented by Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann through police criminal statistics, the DPolG is concerned about the development in the area of non-German suspects, who now make up almost half of all suspects.
To restore trust and respect for institutions and democracy, thereby improving the population’s subjective feeling of security, the DPolG is demanding measures such as strengthening police personnel, improving protection for officers, consistent prevention, and consistent prosecution. They emphasize the need for sufficient staffing and maintaining ongoing dialogue with the public to enhance safety and trust in the state. Additionally, consideration of stricter penalties is mentioned, but prevention and prosecution are key factors.
The DPolG in Bavaria, along with the Bavarian Interior Minister, is advocating for a consistent reversal of the marijuana consumption law from the future federal government. Furthermore, they are advocating for the increased use of video surveillance, automated facial recognition, and AI to identify perpetrators more quickly, but this demand is not directly related to their stance on the marijuana consumption law.
