Police have secured the detention of a YSRCP MP in connection with the alleged 'liquor scam'.

In a significant development, the local court in Amaravati has granted two days of police custody to YSRCP Lok Sabha member PV Midhun Reddy for questioning in a ₹3,200 crore alleged liquor scam case.

Midhun Reddy, who represents Rajampet constituency, is accused number 4 in the case that allegedly occurred during the YSRCP government between 2019 and 2024. He was previously interrogated in April and July this year, but no fresh information was yielded, according to his counter petition.

Investigators sought five days' custody, citing Midhun Reddy's alleged key role in money transfers, brand manipulation, and shell companies. However, the judge limited custody to two days.

The prosecution in the liquor scam case has accused a political-business nexus, claiming suppression of popular brands, preferential orders to new labels, and systematic receipt of kickbacks. The special investigation agency had to prove that Midhun Reddy manipulated liquor trade, carried out illegal money transfers, conspired with others, and made corrupt payments.

Midhun Reddy's lawyers stated that he was not named in the original First Information Report and was added later. They also observed that the higher courts' anticipatory bail attempts failed.

In the counter petition, Midhun Reddy argued that the custody was politically motivated and intended to harass him. The petition further urged the dismissal of the custody petition, claiming that the Special Investigation Team relies on hearsay witnesses and lacks direct evidence.

The court allowed police custody of Midhun Reddy from September 19 to 20, between 8 am and 6 pm, with conditions ensuring medical checkups, advocate presence, and humane treatment.

Midhun Reddy, a three-time MP, has been a key figure in the YSRCP party since its inception. His arrest and the ongoing investigation have raised questions about the party's governance and transparency during its tenure.

This case is still under investigation, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
