Police detective Aaron Amptmeyer from St. John, Indiana succumbs to a medical emergency he experienced during a hockey game.
Detective Aaron Amptmeyer: A Devoted Officer and Community Hero
In a tragic turn of events, St. John Police Detective Aaron Amptmeyer passed away on August 8, 2025, following a medical emergency while playing hockey at the Midwest Training and Ice Center.
Detective Amptmeyer, a highly decorated officer, began his career in 2005 as a police officer with the Gary Police Department. He transferred to the Dyer Police Department in 2007 and joined the St. John Police Department in 2018. Over the years, he rose through the ranks from patrol officer to tactical officer, detective, and ultimately became the commander of the Northwest Regional SWAT Team.
During his time with the St. John Police Department, Detective Amptmeyer was instrumental in mentoring young officers and was deeply loved by his SWAT team and colleagues. He was also a devoted father to his daughter. The community mourned him as a hero, athlete, and passionate individual who saved lives since early in his career.
Bystanders performed CPR on Detective Amptmeyer after his medical emergency, and medics rushed him to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Dyer. Despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The exact cause of his medical emergency remains unspecified.
A memorial with flowers, notes, and hockey gear was set up outside the St. John Police Department, symbolizing the respect and affection the community held for Detective Amptmeyer. His loss is a significant one, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
