Police detain individuals amidst racist disturbances in Northern Ireland
The troubling series of riots in Northern Ireland are fueled by an alleged attempt of sexual assault by Romanian perpetrators. The heinous act led to widespread violence in five cities, and the streets have been patrolled by mobs searching for foreigners to attack. A total of six individuals have been apprehended so far.
The riots began in the city of Ballymena and continued for two nights, causing severe injuries to 17 police officers. The authorities were subjected to assaults with arson, stones, and fireworks, while the rioters caused chaos on the streets.
The pandemonium started in Ballymena on Monday after two teenagers, suspected of the assault, appeared in court and requested a Romanian translator. Enraged by the request, rioters took to the streets, shattering doors and windows, and setting four houses ablaze. The violence even targeted the police, with some of the injured officers requiring hospitalization.
Terror on the Streets
The police ultimately took six individuals into custody for their involvement in the chaos. Residents of Ballymena described the riots as "terrifying," as the mob's attention was fixed on foreigners. The riots also occurred in other cities, including the capital Belfast.
The Northern Irish government denounced the "racist violence of the past few days" and stressed the need for tranquility, as citizens find themselves "terrorized" by the destructive actions of a hate-fuelled minority. The Chief of the Northern Irish Police, Jon Boutcher, warned against the spread of "hate-filled acts" and the "rule of the mob."
Migration remains a contentious issue in the UK, with approximately 1,500 members of the Roma minority living in Northern Ireland, making up 0.1% of the population. The number of Romanians in the region stands at around 6,500.
