Anniversary of Copenhagen Shootings: A Radical Islamist Gunman Deadly Assault in 2015, Resulting in Two Casualties. Visible Enhanced Security Measures Remain a Decade Later, Echoing the Attack's Impact.

Police bearing arms continue to be visible on Copenhagen's Krystalgade, a decade since the devastating terror attack.

Keep that chin up, pal!

This upcoming Friday marks a sobering anniversary - ten years since the chilling gun attacks in Copenhagen by a violent extremist claiming two innocent lives. The lingering reminders of those harrowing days can still be seen today.

Gear Up for a Replay?

In 2015 on February 14th, a crazed shooter descended upon cultural center Krudttønden in Copenhagen, resulting in the death of film director Finn Nørgaard and injuring three courageous cops. Hours later, he ambushed a synagogue on Krystalgade, leaving security guard Dan Uzan dead and injuring two officers.

The cold-blooded assailant, identified as Omar El-Hussein, was believed to be inspired by extremist ideology and had publicly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS) terror group.

Reflecting on the Past

A whole decade has come and gone since the Krudttønden and the synagogue shootings, yet round-the-clock police presence remains a constant on Krystalgade. Dan Rosenberg Asmussen, the head honcho of the Jewish Community in Denmark commented to news outlet Ritzau, "This continued police presence gives us all the necessary sense of safety, and the Jewish community deeply appreciates it."

Asmussen, who was the religious community's chairperson at the time of the deadly attacks and was recently re-elected to the board, hopes that someday, security guards will no longer need to be at the ready in future years.

However, with the current violent upheaval in the Middle East, especially the October 7th, 2023 terror attack on Israel by militant Palestinian group Hamas and the following Israeli war on Gaza, it seems unlikely that hostilities will subside anytime soon.

An increase in anti-Semitic events have been reported since the ongoing conflict escalated.

Asmussen told Ritzau, "I don't foresee the terror threat vanishing anytime soon. But we are busy engaging in valuable dialogue and education to break down the bigoted attitudes and hatred that can trigger terrorism."

The Danish government's Police Intelligence Service PET declined to share with Ritzau the number of potential attacks that have been averted in Denmark since the 2015 terror attacks.

Remembrance events scheduled for the tenth anniversary of the attacks include a conference at the Christiansborg parliament organized by the Finn Nørgaard Association and a memorial in Krystalgade hosted by the Friends of Dan Uzan.

Fun Fact

The intended target of the Krystalgade shooting was renowned Muhammad cartoonist Lars Vilks, who miraculously escaped unscathed.
