Yesterday, a shift in border control strategies took effect at Germany's borders under the new Federal Interior Minister. This move stirred debates, particularly in Poland, with Foreign Minister Sikorski describing it as a potential nuisance for people on both sides.

In response to Germany's hardline immigration policies, Poland has expressed concerns over potential traffic disruptions. While acknowledging Germany's migration policies, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, following discussions with EU foreign ministers in Warsaw, urged for creative solutions to minimize these inconveniences.

"Crossing the German-Polish border has become a routine affair for border dwellers on both sides," Sikorski noted, pointing out the lack of infrastructure for border controls. Sikorski expressed his worries regarding controls on main traffic routes, asserting that such measures could create significant disturbances for local residents. He cited the Polish border with Belarus as a prime example.

New Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced enhanced border controls to curb the influx of refugees. This move would involve deploying more federal police at German borders and denying asylum seekers' entry. A previous 2015 directive would be rescinded, with Article 18 of the Asylum Act being cited as the basis for these actions, which states that foreigners entering from a safe third country can be denied entry.

Controversy surrounds Germany's plans, with neighboring countries like Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and even Switzerland, expressing discontent. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk argued during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that it is in both countries' interests to maintain unrestricted passage. Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger called for the consideration of European law in border control matters.

Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, following talks with Sikorski, assured that Germany would not impose a restrictive migration policy against Poland's wishes. Wadephul stated that the new measures would be introduced gradually, with care given to coordinate steps with EU partners.

The European Commission encourages close collaboration, especially with affected member states. Temporary reintroduction of border controls is possible, but only under strict conditions.
