Poland faces international scrutiny for allegedly understating the extent of damage caused by a drone incursion.

In a series of events that have sparked controversy and political tension, a Polish home in the village of Wyryki in eastern Poland was damaged on September 10. The incident, which is currently under investigation by the Polish public prosecutor's office in Lublin, has led to a heated debate between the government and opposition parties.

The Polish daily Rzeczpospolita revealed the incident on September 16, sparking a wave of criticism towards the government for concealing information and fueling Russian propaganda. Former PiS defence minister Mariusz Błaszczak was among those who criticized the government, stating that the lack of transparency was unacceptable.

Initially, the Polish government attributed the damage to Russian aggression. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the full responsibility for the damage in Wyryki falls on Russia, and that the government would inform the public fully about the incident once the investigation is complete. However, it was later reported that the home was hit by a falling rocket fired from a Polish F-16 fighter plane, due to a guidance system malfunction.

This revelation has angered Polish President Karol Nawrocki and his allies in the opposition Conservatives (PiS) and Confederation parties. Nawrocki's chancellery issued a statement accusing the government of concealing information about the incident. The Joint leader of the right-wing Confederation Party, Krzysztof Bosak, accused the government of lying, manipulating, and concealing facts regarding the incident in Wyryki.

Former PiS prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki also joined the criticism, calling the government's actions dishonest and damaging to public unity. Defence minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, however, rejected these claims, stating that all information was released once it was verified.

The use of fighter planes has also been a point of contention, with some defence analysts criticising the high cost involved and the potential betrayal of Poland and NATO's lack of specific air defence systems against drones on the eastern flank of the alliance.

The events in Wyryki are not the first time there has been a dispute over whose rocket hit a Polish property. A similar dispute occurred over a rocket that fell in Przewodów in late 2022.

The drone incursion resulted in NATO planes shooting down four out of the 19 drones that flew into Polish airspace for the first time during the war in Ukraine. Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski has been criticised by the Confederation Party for his repeated calls for NATO to shoot down drones over Ukraine.

Tusk's statement "Hands off our soldiers" has also been a point of contention, with some commentators interpreting it as a criticism of the military carrying out its tasks.

As the investigation into the incident in Wyryki continues, the political fallout is likely to continue, with both the government and opposition parties digging in their heels. The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by nations in times of conflict, and the importance of transparency and honesty in maintaining public trust.
